Can you believe this is Sketchup?!
Sketchup can do good ocean scenes, if you just use it to position pre-existing 3D shapes.
When rocks are copied, rotated randomly, and moved around, it looks natural.
In photoshop, I added grey birds to simulate distance, a bit of clouds, and calcium rings around the rocks. I played with overlaying the image over itself and blurring one of the layers.
Using the free and extremely simple "visualizer for sketchup" to make the shadows pretty.
Sketchup likes to make boxes, very rigid and straight. So make or import your organic shapes and rocks beforehand.
Install the latest sketchup, and the visualizer for Sketchup, and just have some fun learning it. Sketchup isn't so hot with designing organic shapes, but if you want to do organics you can use an app called Mudbox which is free to students.
